Cookie Policy

Effective Date: January 1, 2025 Last Updated: August 8, 2026

This Cookie Policy explains how Askalot uses cookies and similar technologies when you visit our websites and use our services.

Askalot is operated by Askalot Survey & Research Kft. (H-1036 Budapest, Bécsi út 85., Hungary; EU VAT HU32994069), so our use of cookies is governed by the GDPR and the Hungarian implementation of the ePrivacy Directive.

In short: we set exactly one cookie before you choose. It records your cookie decision itself. Analytics are loaded only if you accept, and if you later decline we delete the analytics cookies rather than merely stopping new ones.

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They help websites remember your preferences, understand how you use the site, and improve your experience.

We use the term "cookies" broadly to include:

  • Cookies: Small text files stored in your browser
  • Local Storage: Data stored in your browser's local storage
  • Session Storage: Data stored temporarily during your browser session
  • Pixels/Web Beacons: Small images that track page views and interactions

Types of Cookies We Use

Strictly Necessary Cookies

These are required for the platform to function or to record your own privacy choice. They are set without consent, as permitted for strictly necessary purposes.

Cookie Purpose Duration Set where
askalot_token Authentication session (HttpOnly, Secure, SameSite=Lax) 24 hours After you log in
askalot_consent Remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics 6 months When you answer the cookie banner

You cannot disable these cookies — without askalot_token you cannot stay logged in, and without askalot_consent we would have to ask you on every page.

Protection against cross-site request forgery uses request Origin header validation, not a cookie.

Analytics Cookies — only after you accept

We use Google Analytics 4, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to understand how our public websites — askalot.io and docs.askalot.io — are used.

Nothing analytics-related loads until you accept. We run Google Consent Mode v2 in basic mode: until you choose "Accept analytics", the Google Tag Manager container is never requested, so no data — not even your IP address — reaches Google. This is stricter than the common configuration, where tags load immediately and merely withhold storage.

If you accept, the following are set:

Cookie Purpose Duration
_ga Google Analytics visitor ID 2 years
_ga_<container ID> Google Analytics session state 2 years

We use analytics data in aggregate and do not use it to identify individual users. Advertising, ad personalisation, and ad-user-data storage are permanently denied — we do not advertise.

If you later decline, we delete these cookies rather than only preventing new ones, so withdrawing consent is as effective as never having given it.

Cookies we do not use

For clarity, Askalot sets no advertising cookies, no cross-site tracking cookies, and no social-media pixels anywhere, and no third-party cookies beyond the Google Analytics cookies described above.

Cookies on Survey Pages

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies on survey-taking pages.

When respondents complete surveys, only essential cookies required for survey functionality are used:

  • Session management
  • Progress tracking
  • Response validation

Survey creators cannot add third-party tracking cookies to surveys.

Third-Party Cookies

Some cookies are set by third-party services we use:

Authentication Providers

When using social login (Google, Microsoft), these providers may set their own cookies according to their privacy policies:

Analytics Services

We use Google Analytics to understand platform usage:

Browser Settings

You can control cookies through your browser settings:

Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and other site data

Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data

Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and website data

Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Cookies and site data

Click Cookie Preferences in the footer of askalot.io or docs.askalot.io to reopen the banner and change your decision at any time. Declining is always as easy as accepting — both are a single click, presented equally.

Your choice is stored for the whole askalot.io domain, so answering once on one of our sites covers the others; we will not ask again until the record expires after six months.

Impact of Disabling Cookies

Declining analytics has no effect on functionality — every feature works identically. It only means we cannot see aggregate usage of our public pages.

The strictly necessary cookies cannot be declined: blocking askalot_token in your browser prevents you from staying logged in, and blocking askalot_consent means the cookie banner reappears on every page.

Do Not Track

Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) setting. We do not currently respond to DNT signals as a separate mechanism — but since nothing analytics-related loads until you actively accept, declining (or simply not answering) the banner already achieves what DNT asks for.

Cookies and Mobile Apps

If we offer mobile applications, they may use similar technologies:

  • Device identifiers for authentication
  • Local storage for offline functionality
  • Analytics SDKs for usage understanding

Updates to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. We will:

  • Update the "Last Updated" date
  • Post the revised policy on our website
  • Notify you of significant changes
